The elegant Praça Sá da Bandeira at the feet of the baroque 17th-century Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and relaxed squares in Portugal. Kids play freely, teens slide down its gentle slope on skateboards, and people sit on the half-moon-shaped staircases and chat. Santarém knows how to carve time out of urban stress among silences, giggles, and the quietude that timeless beauty always conveys.
