Famous as Portugal's Capital of the Gothic, Santarém is an open book of Roman, Gothic, and Manueline architectures combined. It’s also known in Portugal and Brazil for being the place where Pedro Álvares Cabral, who discovered Brazil on the 22nd of April 1500, is buried. From its hilltop, the city gazes at a wide plateau stretching along the banks of the Tagus River, a region known for its horse breeding and intensive farming that nurtures the whole country and sustains its famous gastronomy.
