Montijo Caught in an Airport Mirage

The shape and map of the Península de Setúbal, on the south bank of the Tagus River, is like a happy dog rolling on a carpet, leaking Lisbon out of joy. Almada forms its nose, Montijo its tail.

The Península de Setúbal is a sub-region within the Lisbon area made of nine municipalities: Alcochete, Almada, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, and Setúbal. Almada is the largest, with a 2024 estimated population of 183,643, and Alcochete the smallest, at 20,462. The Península is also a wine region, its map stretching diagonally from Montijo to Sines.

Where Will Portugal’s Next Airport Land?—An article dated 2020 highlights the complexity of the answer. Portugal’s government has since officially approved the construction of Lisbon’s second international airport in Alcochete. Codename: Luís de Camões Airport; it will take over the Alcochete Firing Range, about 40 km east of Lisbon. “Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2034—a project long overshadowed by recurring setbacks and revisions.
