Stills Not So Still at Madre’s Atelier

“Clay is a beautifully complex material. It’s sturdy yet fragile, malleable yet rigid, compliant yet stubborn. In many ways, it mirrors my own creative journey—introspective and always evolving toward acceptance.”

Madre de Deus is a Portuguese ceramist working from her atelier in Bairro Alto, Lisbon. She holds dual degrees in Fine Arts & Fashion and Design & Creation. At the potter’s wheel, she shapes pieces where sketch lines transform into poetic objects. This late afternoon at the Mercado de Ofícios de Bairro Alto, Madre and I experimented with still photography, using props from Rui at Latoaria Maciel—a seventh-generation tin maker who still crafts candelabras, lanterns, and chandeliers by hand. The mercado is open to the public and located on Tv. da Boa Hora, in Bairro Alto, Lisbon.
