Founded in 1119, the Knights Templar in Tomar, Portugal, was a religious and military order that pioneered the concept of crusade to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land and reconquer Jerusalem. The Templars' red cross became a symbol of divine support, power, and wealth during two centuries as the order grew into a wealthy landowner that influenced politics and society in medieval Portugal.
The order's dissolution was politically driven, fueled by false rumors fabricated by King Philip IV of France. It was finalized by Pope Clement V between 1307 and 1312, not without brutal persecution. Their story—blending valor, faith, and intrigue—has crossed centuries, as has the architectural grandeur it left behind.The Convento de Cristo (Convent of Christ) in Tomar, was built in the late 12th century to combine monastic life with military duties. It was registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
