Angel Hair and Tangerine Dreams
Photography by Claudine Boeglin
We blew red sparks on the wall, circled our pots with angel hair, fired with masks, hair tightened, pink cheeks—experiencing the heat, the magic of the unknown. Impossible to describe how joyful, experimental, communal, and cool this day was—unless you were there. Miguel and Nuno are artists and educators. That’s why both fenced everything in rigorous safety, to let everyone improvise the minute after: chilled and playful.
When your artifact gets fired, the flame leaks its design with dangerous incandescence. The smoke is toxic. The surprise holds its suspense. Stirred off the fire, it gets rolled in tar as if punished, then dipped in water, cleaned up, to finally reveal itself in always unexpected manners.
Each one of us gazes and inspects this strangely familiar–unfamiliar artifact. We rotate it with our fingers as if a thick cigar, in awe. To be remembered that clay is soil, Earth, sharing with asters, ebbs and flows, moss and water lilies, something unnameable and mysterious.
When the night came down, the garden vanished backstage. The flames of the oven erupted into tangerine lights. So we drank together, cheering one another by striking our just-made cups with attitude and laughs. Yes we made this! It felt haute couture and priceless—even unperfected.
Once home, we tried our trophies in different corners, joy still rippling. The objects stood out. It was nothing we had bought or received or found. These ceramic cups wore our fingerprints, along with the memory of a Perfect Day.
@RakuWorkshop. Next in line: October. Limited space. Stay tuned.
