Mercado of Olhão where fish and vegetables cohabite

Olhão’s covered market with its sentinel twin towers, is the hallmark of the city stretching along the main road and its terraces of fish flavors.

Facing the Ria Formosa, the Mercado was inaugurated in 1916 with two distinct and adjacent halls; one for fish, the other for fruit and vegetables. Built in iron and red brick, it recalls the industrial legacy of the early 20th-century factory style. Every Saturday, the farmers come in and add their local-sourced products to the market’s offer, right outside the edifice. A celebration of blue-zone lifestyle.
