Lanzarote, Land of the Timanfaya's abrasive lava

Lanzarote in the Gran Canaries is a striking environment and work of art shaped by the most tellurique expression of geology, its (still) active volcanoes. Spanish artist activist César Manrique speaks of the intrinsic nature of his connection to his homeland: "To have been born in this burnt-out geology of ashes, in the middle of the Atlantic, conditions any moderately sensitive being.”

Manrique was a passionate defender of the environment, pioneering a greener future and sustainable tourism when it was fairly unpopular to stand against the lobby of reckless real estate development for mass tourism.

His art, architecture, and activism have given frames to the whole, and have wrapped around its unique erosions. The haunting land and his lava-inspired painting form a fusional and inseparable masterpiece.
