Madeira Island 2025
"Four Seasons In One Day"
Photography by Claudine Boeglin
The first people settled on the island in 1420. In this solemn land, mountains wrap themselves in clouds, slender eucalyptus trees line serpentine roads, and houses cling tightly to the steep hills. Humans, clad in hiking gear, are reminded of their true scale, dwarfed by dominanting nature. Situated about 600 kilometers from Agadir and 1,000 kilometers from Lisbon, the archipelago of Madeira is African in allure and Portuguese in culture, attracting two million overnight visitors in 2023. Sheer beauty always comes with a price.
