Concept
Studio A is a collaborative project written by creative director Claudine Boeglin / Dandy Vagabonds to bring together the leading music label Erased Tapes and art house publisher MACK. Born out of a shared belief in the cross-pollination of visual arts and music, Studio A culminates in a series of live events that will take place at the iconic Premises Studios on Hackney Road, London. Each event pairs a musician and an artist for a live performance hinged on improvisation and experimentation.

These happenings are streamed live to the world and recorded in full. The collaboration between each artist and musician is a jumping off point for the wider collaboration between music, art and audience. The audience plays a fundamental role in the immersive experience, encountering the performance in its own way and whereabouts.

The launch of Studio A, 30 September 2020, brought together in artistic connivence British songwriter Douglas Dare who wrote specially three songs as tributes to the book, the photographic body of work and the lives of April Dawn Alison. She/they lived in the world as a man with a commercial photography profession and as their female persona, created a body of self-portraits spanning 30 years, drawing on influences as broad-ranging as BDSM pornography, classic film and advertising.

Erased Tapes
Founded by German-born sound architect Robert Raths in 2007, Erased Tapes is a truly independent record label that has disrupted the industry and rejuvenated the musical landscape. Based in London it has nurtured genre defying artists from all around the world without losing its avant garde ethos.

The Premises Studios
The Premises Studios on Hackney Road is an independent 1000 square feet recording studio with 4 isolated fully equipped studios, including on the top floor, the elegant Studio A bathed in acres of natural light and pale wood. The mythic Studio has welcomed generation of musicians. Lately Tony Visconti, Goldfrapp, Roots Manuva, Michael Kiwanuka, Bat For Lashes, Tom Odell, Izzy Bysu, Tom Jones, Benjamin Clementine, Stormzy, FKA Twigs, PP Arnold, Fat White Family, Jack Buck, Elisa Doolittle, James Blake, Little Simz… pushed its doors for rehearsal and recording.
